International Olympic Web-Seminar

Hosts

  • Prof. Bernardo Buarque (FGV-CPDOC) for the Laboratory for Sports Studies, LESP (Fundação Getúlio Vargas – Rio de Janeiro – Brazil)
  • Prof. Patrick Clastres (ISSUL-CRHIM) for the Global Sport & Olympic Studies Center (University of Lausanne – UNIL – Switzerland)

Proposal: Since the edition of Barcelona in 1992, global cities, hosts of Olympic competitions, have been the target of large public debates around their urban legacy. The internationalization of this discussion, in turn, requires research institutions to share viewpoints, which can act jointly to think about the transnational scale achieved by sports in contemporary times. In this sense, two research groups from different countries, focused on the area of sport studies, propose a partnership for conducting an international web-seminar to bring together experts from Brazil, Switzerland, United Kingdom and Japan universities. It is a scientific meeting aimed to discuss how the renown of the cities that host mega sporting events is addressed by their respective countries. For this meeting, the cases highlighted are the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2021, considering that they provide a more up-to-date picture of the challenges posed to the host cities.

Language: The official language of the event is English.
