Incluso tras una terrible desgracia como el accidente aéreo de Munich de 1958, donde fallecieron 11 miembros del Manchester, entre jugadores y directivos, el técnico supo reconducir al equipo para acabar conquistando su anhelada primera Copa de Europa de 1968.
