“Deixem em paz os nossos ‘cracks’”

O futebol profissional se constituiu em categoria regulamentada nos principais centros urbanos brasileiros em 1933, ano que alguns clubes se organizaram para fundar entidades privadas de gestão do referido esporte. O marco oficial da regulamentação do futebol profissional, não pode, contudo, ser compreendido como momento que a profissão de jogador se originou. Entendemos a categoria sociológica “profissão” como função social especializada ofertada frente uma demanda existente. Nesse sentido, a gênese da profissão de jogador de futebol se insere no conjunto de transformações do significado social da prática e do consumo dessa modalidade esportiva, caracterizando-a como uma indústria do espetáculo esportivo e via de ascensão social para praticantes das camadas menos favorecidas da sociedade. O objeto de pesquisa desta dissertação foi o significado sociológico da regulamentação da profissão de jogador de futebol e sua repercussão no cenário nacional, e particularmente a reação do America Futebol Clube de Belo Horizonte. A partir da análise documental de periódicos e de memórias de atores sociais daquele contexto, discutimos o contexto das políticas sociais pré-Estado novistas (1930-1937) estabelecendo relações com o movimento de profissionalização do futebol, as disputas políticas dos dirigentes esportivos na organização do futebol local junto às entidades de gestão dos esportes da cidade, sobretudo as discussões acerca da profissionalização do futebol, e as estratégias dos clubes belo-horizontinos em conformar o futebol uma “indústria do espetáculo esportivo”. Frente à crescente demanda social caracterizada pela conformação da identidade clubística, os dirigentes esportivos alcançavam prestígio social e conquistas políticas por meio da atuação no futebol. Além disso, a Liga local e os principais clubes de Belo Horizonte inseriram o futebol nas engrenagens do sistema capitalista através da oferta de disputas futebolísticas durante a década de 1920. Para aprimorar a mercadoria jogo de futebol, passou-se a se exigir cada vez mais dos jogadores, produtores do espetáculo esportivo em questão. Por isso, antes mesmo da regulamentação profissional, constatamos a existência de jogadores especializados, mesmo que de forma incipiente, no campo futebolístico, sendo pagos extraoficialmente para praticarem o futebol, já que a Liga reconhecia apenas o amadorismo esportivo. A criação da Divisão Profissional em 1933 rompeu com a indefinição do status do jogador daquele contexto, inscrito como amador e que atuava como profissional, garantindo-lhe direitos básicos. Entretanto, as fontes apresentam o fato como uma iniciativa dos dirigentes esportivos e não como conquista dos “trabalhadores da bola”.

The professional soccer constitutes in a category regulated in the main Brazilian urban centers in 1933, year when some soccer clubs organized themselves in order to create new private entities to manage the sport modality. However, the moment when the soccer player profession originated cannot be understood as the official landmark of the professional soccer regulation. “Profession”, as a sociologic category, can be understood as a specialized social function, which is offered as a response to an existing demand. Therefore, the genesis of the soccer player profession is inserted in the transformations associated to the social meaning of the practice, and the consumption of the sport modality. This genesis characterizes the modality as an industry of the sport’s show, and as a way of social accession for the soccer players from the least benefited sections of the society. The research objective of this masters’ dissertation was the sociological meaning of the soccer player professional regulation, and its national repercussion, in special the response of the America Futebol Clube in the city of Belo Horizonte. We discuss the social political context of the Vargas Government (1930-1937), by means of documental analysis of journals and memories of the social actors of that context, which were collected through open and in depth interviews. We establish relationships between the soccer professionalization movement, the political debates among the lieders of soccer organizations and the sporting managing entities of the city, especially focusing on the discussions around the professionalization of the soccer and, the strategies of the sports clubs in the city to consolidate the soccer as an “industry of the sporting spectacle”. We noticed that, as a response to the constant social demand, characterized by the strengthening of the soccer clubs as entities, the sporting lieders reached, through their involvement with the soccer, social respect and political achievement. Besides, we point out that the local League, and the main clubs in Belo Horizonte included the soccer in the engines of the capitalism system through the offer of soccer disputes during the 1920’s. In order to improve the market of the soccer games, soccer players, the producers of the spectacle, became even more demanded. As a consequence, even before the professional regulation, we noticed the existence of specialized soccer players, even in an incipient form in the context of the sport per see, being extra officially paid, since the League only recognized the amateur soccer. The creating of the profession division in 1933 offered basic rights to soccer players and broke with the lack of definition of their status in that context, which even though performed as professionals, were considered as amateurs. However, the sources present the fact as an initiative that came from the sporting leaders, but not as a deserved conquest of the “workers of the ball”.
