In the shadow of the past: soccer in British-German relations

Die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2002 gilt als die Veranstaltung mit der größten Zuschauerzahl in der Fernsehgeschichte. Dennoch wird der moderne Sport beim Studium internationaler Beziehungen meist vernachlässigt. Besonders seine Rolle für das Verhältnis der Nationen untereinander wird unterschätzt. Das gilt nicht zuletzt für Großbritannien und Deutschland, artikulierten und reflektierten, beeinflussten und bestärkten sich doch die Vorstellungen der Briten über Deutschland im 20. Jahrhundert immer wieder auf dem Fußballplatz und in der Fußballberichterstattung. Diese Entwicklung dauert auch im 21. Jahrhundert an. Die ersten drei Länderspiele wie auch der Wettbewerb um die Vergabe der WM 2006 haben erneut gezeigt, wie Problem beladen die britisch-deutschen Beziehungen auf diesem Gebiet sind, zumal geschichtliche Metaphern, insbesondere der Rekurs auf den Zweiten Weltkrieg, nach wie vor einen außersportlichen Subtext der Berichterstattung über englisch-deutsche Fußballbeziehungen darstellen.

The 2002 Football World Cup Finals, described as the most viewed event in television history, raised yet again questions about the realism of continuing to write sport out of international relations research, and particularly to ignore its role in international relationships, such as Britain’s relations with Germany. The football field proved another important British-German battleground throughout the 20th century, and hence the game articulated, mirrored, influenced, and reinforced British perceptions of Germany, especially at the popular and media levels. This trend continues in the 21st century. Already, three high profile internationals played during 2000-2001 as well as rivalry to host the 2006 World Cup tournaments have illuminated the problematic state of the British-German relationship, including the manner in which history, most notably world war imagery, imparts an enduring extra-sporting sub-text for the British media coverage of England-German footballing encounters.
