Um regresso à história do futebol na capital de Moçambique durante o período colonial

Este texto regressa brevemente a um conjunto de questões sobre a história do futebol em Lourenço Marques durante o período colonial, aprofundando algumas dimensões do trabalho de investigação publicado inicialmente em 2012 – Futebol e colonialismo: corpo e cultura popular em Moçambique. São estas, em primeiro lugar, a relação do futebol com a estratificação social, o novo mundo urbano e a formação de identidades sociais; em segundo lugar, a questão da masculinidade em contexto urbano e as transformações das estruturas de poder africanas; em terceiro, o debate sobre a modernidade colonial, expressa originalmente pelo jogo de futebol, e que tem no confronto entre a oralidade e a escrita um dos seus laboratórios mais profícuos; por fim, estas observações encerram com uma reflexão sobre de que modo a história do futebol em Moçambique constitui uma experiência social, performativa e estética útil para questionar o futebol contemporâneo.

This text briefly returns to a set of questions about the history of football in Lourenço Marques during the colonial period, deepening some dimensions of the research work I initially published in 2012 – Futebol e colonialismo: corpo e cultura popular em Moçambique. These are, first, the relationship of football with the colonial social stratification, the new urban world and the formation of social identities; second, the question of masculinity in an urban context and the transformations of African power structures; third, the debate about colonial modernity, originally expressed through football’s performances, which has in the confrontation between orality and writing one of its most fruitful laboratories; finally, these observations close with a reflection on how the history of football in Mozambique constitutes a social, performative and aesthetic experience useful to question contemporary football.
