A few days before the World Cup kicked off in Russia, teams like Matabeleland, Northern Cyprus, Punjab, Tibet and Tuvalu dueled in London. Since 2014, the Conifa World Cup has brought together those teams whose countries are not recognized or accepted by FIFA – but that doesn’t stop them from taking to the pitch for their country. Joel Rookwood accompanied the team from Matabeleland, a region in Zimbabwe, to this alternative World Cup.
