This work registers the historical evolution of soccer, since its beginning as an amateur sport up to the present moment, as a vital part of a large business that deals with many billion dollars each year and is an important component of the entertainment industry in a media rich society that has mass communication and marketing as its basic pillars. An analysis of these subjects, regarding them as universal ones, comparing soccer in Brazil to the one in more developed countries, is part of this research. As a world-wide activity, spread out in a globalized and media integrated society that involves many other sports, soccer shows its strength as an extremely professional business that allows very little opportunity to amateurism. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze this complex relation: soccer in a spectacle society, as a product and spectacle producer, instrument and main player of the many relations that involve leisure and entertainment as one of biggest enterprise activities in the world. An extensive bibliographical research has been made to follow up and contextualize the sport evolution. Market research, interviews in clubs and media, questionnaires and polls have been made in Brazil and other countries to better understand soccer and its relation with rooters, clients, supporters and consumers. The sets of data collected allowed a deep analysis of the main causes and consequences of soccer evolution from its humble beginning to the large business it is today, intertwined with mass media in growth and crisis, closely tied to the spectacle, leisure and entertainment industry and that has marketing and communication as important tools to foster its expansion.
