Les footballeurs expatriés dans le monde

Cet article analyse, pour la première fois, à partir d’une base de données originale sur plus de 11 000 footballeurs expatriés en 2017 et répartis dans 90 asso­cia­tions nationales, la géographie du football mondial. Il montre une organisation centrée sur l’Europe, principal marché pour les joueurs de football et un pôle secon­daire en Amérique du Sud. Le taux d’expatriés par habitant aide à comprendre la tradition et l’importance du football selon les pays et les mécanismes qui permettent l’exportation de joueurs. Les quatre principales nationalités sont étudiées en détail. Les Brésiliens constituent la seule main-d’œuvre véritablement mondiali­sée, alors que les Argentins sont dominants sur le marché américain. En Europe, les joueurs français sont très demandés, surtout dans les pays limitrophes, de même que les Serbes un peu plus à l’est. Au final, cette géographie montre que la planète football est toujours en expansion.

From an original database of more than 11,000 expatriate footballers in 2017 and spread into 90 national associations, the paper analyzes for the first time the geography of world football. It shows an organization centered on Europe, which is the main market for players and, secondary, a regional core in South America. The rate expatriate per inhabitant shows the tradition and importance of football across countries and the mechanisms for players’ export. The four main nationalities are studied in more detail. The Brazilians are the only truly globalized workforce, while the Argentineans are dominant in the American market. In Europe, French players are very requested, especially in neighboring countries, as well as Serbs in the Eastern part of the continent. Finally, such geography shows that football still expands worldwilde.
