Abstract
The article aims to address the issue of racism throughout the World Cup, focusing, in particular, the counterpoint provided by the academic literature between the events of the 1950 and 1958. The analytical approach proposed here considers the soccer environment as a space of emergence for both the affirmation of identities as well as for the establishment of stereotypes related to the black athlete. The text aims to clarify racial logic responsible for the existence of the characters that support the dominant representations about the African-Brazilian athletes, notably of the “malabarista” (juggler) and of the “pipoqueiro” (athlete considered as coward) be seen as in the text front and back of an identity entangled in the meshes of the prejudice and discrimination.
