O paí­s do futebol: a construção intelectual do futebol como elemento constituinte da identidade nacional (1930-1950)

Com o surgimento e popularização do futebol no Brasil no início do século XX, o tema foi chamando a atenção de diversos intelectuais brasileiros que passaram a pensar o esporte como elemento constituinte da identidade nacional, na medida em que diversos segmentos da sociedade foram tomando parte no sentimento de identificação do esporte com o país. Havia uma preocupação no período abordado (décadas de 30, 40 e 50) de se discutir embates sociais presentes na História para que se pudesse responder a questões que pudessem levar o Brasil a um maior desenvolvimento e igualdade social. Quem somos? Pra onde vamos? Essas eram as perguntas que se faziam presentes. Portanto os intelectuais buscavam analisar as práticas culturais do povo brasileiro como forma de responder a essas dúvidas, sendo o futebol parte significativa dessa cultura. Dessa forma o trabalho buscará um diálogo com o pensamento de três importantes intelectuais que tratam do tema: Gilberto Freyre, Mário Filho e Nelson Rodrigues, analisando como a relação do futebol e da identidade nacional é apresentado em suas obras.

With the emergence and popularization of football in Brazil in the early twentieth century, the theme was drawing attention from several Brazilian intellectuals who came to think about this sport as an element of national identity, while many segments of society were taking part in feeling of identification between the sport and the nation. There was a concern in the period (the 30, 40 and 50) to discuss social conflicts in the history so that they could answer questions that could lead Brazil to the further development and social equality. Who are we? Where do we go? These were questions that were present. Therefore the intellectuals sought to examine cultural practices of Brazilian people as a way to answer these questions, being football a significant part of this culture. So the article will seek a dialogue with the thought of three important intellectuals who deal with the theme: Gilberto Freyre, Mário Filho e Nelson Rodrigues, analyzing how the relationship between football and national identity is presented in their work.
