Na última rodada da fase de grupos, Estados Unidos e Alemanha precisavam apenas de um empate para que ambas equipes chegassem à próxima fase. A presença do técnico do selecionado yankee, o ex-jogador alemão Jürgen Klismann, aumentava a expectativa de um possível, mas pouco provável acordo de cavalheiros.
Como esperado, a seriedade dos profissionais em campo foi traduzida num primeiro tempo equilibrado. A forte chuva intensificou as disputas corpo-a-corpo, o que chamamos na gíria do futebol de um jogo “amarrado”.
Os 10 primeiros minutos indicavam uma Alemanha bem postada, mas logo os erros de passes no último terço do campo impediam melhor conclusão das jogadas alemãs. Os laterais germânicos não faziam boa partida, bem como Mest Özil , deslocado da faixa mais criativa do campo, por opção do técnico Joachim Löw.
Na segunda etapa, a saída de Lukas Podolski coincidentemente trouxe a entrada de uma melhora alemã. Özil e principalmente Bastian Schweinsteiger organizaram as principais ações do ataque e controlaram o meio campo da partida.
Enfim, após um rebote da defesa norte-americana, Thomas Müller acerta um belo chute de fora da área definindo a vitória alemã. No restante da partida as seleções administraram o placar: alemães controlando a posse de bola (63%) garantindo o primeiro lugar do grupo, e norte-americanos que, com exceção de um último lance de perido no fim do jogo, protegiam a sua meta e seu saldo de gols tomados a fim de garantir pelo critério de desempate a segunda colocação no grupo G.
