La boxe à travers la presse (Espagne, Mexique, XIXe siècle): l’homo americanus en « guantes como fórmula de civilización»

La boxe, sport populaire en Angleterre puis aux États-Unis au XIXe siècle, est vue dans la presse espagnole et mexicaine de la fin du siècle comme l’expression de la civilisation matérielle anglo-saxonne qui se teinte de la violence qu’incarne le combat, dans le contexte de l’antagonisme entre Espagne, Mexique et États-Unis pour le contrôle des territoires du continent américain. La force des poings semble être le caractère distinctif de la manière de faire de la politique en Angleterre et aux États-Unis. Dénigrée pour la déshumanisation des combattants qu’elle implique, les désordres sociaux et moraux qu’elle alimente, la boxe conquiert peu à peu une certaine autonomie grâce aux récits de combats qui suscitent une nouvelle créativité langagière. La description du corps musclé du boxeur américain statufie un nouveau type d’« homo americanus » dans lequel se reconnaissent les nord-américains et suscite fascination et rejet, de manière assez homogène, dans les articles des chroniqueurs mexicains et espagnols, conscients de l’enjeu culturel et politique que représente l’acceptation de la boxe comme sport civilisé.

Boxing, a popular sport in England and then in the United States in the 19th century, was seen in the Spanish and Mexican press, at the end of the century, as the expression of Anglo-Saxon material civilization which was tinged with the violence embodied by the fight, in the context of the antagonism between Spain, Mexico and the United States for the control of the territories of the American continent. The strength of the fists seems to be the distinctive character of the way of doing politics in England and the United States. Denigrated for the dehumanization of the fighters that it implies, the social and moral disorders that it feeds, boxing gradually conquers a certain autonomy thanks to the stories of fights which arouse a new linguistic creativity. The description of the muscular body of the American boxer establishes a new type of “homo americanus” in which North Americans recognize themselves and arouses fascination and rejection, fairly evenly, in the articles of Mexican and Spanish columnists aware of the cultural and policy represented by the acceptance of boxing as a civilized sport.
