La Coupe du monde et la politisation du football en France

Le football est associé depuis les années 1920 à la République. Le lien a été renforcé par le principe délégataire mis en place à la Libération, puis le rôle joué par l’État dans la réorganisation du football français dans les années 1970. C’est surtout dans la décennie suivante que le football devient politique à un moment où les progrès des équipes françaises contrastent avec la crise industrielle et sociale que connaît le pays. La Coupe du monde de football joue un rôle ambivalent. La victoire 1998 semble prouver le succès du modèle d’intégration à la française. La grève de 2010, au contraire, est un moment de stigmatisation des jeunes des banlieues. Le football a ainsi pris place dans le discours politique et semble aussi incarner un espace social où le principe méritocratique serait encore en vigueur.

Football has been associated with the Republic since the 1920s. The link was strengthened by the principle of “delegation” set up at the Liberation, and then the role played by the State in the reorganisation of French football in the 1970s. It was especially in the following decade that football became political at a time when the progress of French teams contrasted with the industrial and social crisis that the country was experiencing. The World Cup played an ambivalent role. The 1998 victory seemed to prove the success of the French integration model. The 2010 strike, on the other hand, is a moment of stigmatisation of the suburbs’ youth. Football has thus taken its place in the political discourse and also seems to embody a social space where the meritocratic principle would be still in force.
